Religion: The temples in Athens represent their religion, and how important it is. They worshiped many gods and goddesses who, they believed often acted like humans but did not get old and die. They each had a power over a particular area of life. The Greeks often asked for advice. The Greeks told colorful stories about gods called myths. The home of the gods was Mount Olympus, a real mountain in Greece. There were 12 important gods/goddesses that were often called the Olympian god.
Zeus= ruler of the gods
Hera= wife of Zeus; goddess of marriage.
Poseidon= Brother of Zeus; God of the sea
Hestia= Sister of Zeus; Goddess of the hearth; [the family fire]
Demeter= Sister of Zeus; sister of agriculture
Ares= Son of Zeus; god of war
Athena= Daughter of Zeus; Goddess of wisdom and war
Apollo=Son of Zeus; God of the sun, poetry, and music
Artemis= Daughter of Zeus; goddess of the moon and the hunt
Hephaestus= son of Zeus; God of fire and metalworks
Aphrodite=Daughter of Zeus; god of love and beauty
Hermes= Son of Zeus; Messenger of the gods and the gods of travel
Ancient Greece is a city of great contrast and differences. People lived in little house that lined down the streets. The streets were very narrow.The public city and buildings were large and stately. In Athens, most homes here are one story high and are made out of mud bricks. the homes of the poor were very simple and the wealthier people had larger houses with rooms around the central court yard. All the home of the rich and poor were uncomfortable and simple. There were few windows, and they were lit by oil lamps. The houses were always smoky and hot in the summer and smokey and cold in the winter. They stress were always narrow, crooked, and dirty with dust, dirt and people's garbage. People threw their garbage on the streets and that made everybody smell bad. The pride of Athens where the building and the public spaces.
