Contributions and Legacy
Many contributions from Greece were used in future empires. Their contributions are still used today as well.
For example Ancient Greece influenced Rome. The idea of having god's controlling specific areas of power. In fact, many of the Greek gods had roman counterparts. The only difference was the names were changed. For example, Jupiter is the roman form of Zeus, who is Greek.
Another contribution is the plays that Greece had. Many of the shows that were put on in Greek theaters are still told today.
Also, many of the Greek architectural designs are still used today. Like the Doric, Ionic, and Corinthian columns.
Another important contribution was geometry, which was used to measure the land and see how many seeds were needed to be planted.
Another area of contribution is government. For example Greece gave us the idea of Democracy. This is important because the U.S. and other countries wouldn’t have the freedom of speech like if you lived in another country without democracy. One thing that is different between the U.S.’s government and Ancient Greece’s was that everybody could vote in ancient Greece, under the right conditions. In the U.S., people elect representatives to make choices for us.
Another contribution is they discovered that the brain is the center of the central nervous system. Also, they noticed that the heart pump blood. Hippocrates was a huge influence in the world of Greece’s medicine.
Another contribution is the understanding of plants. The figured out 3 different groups of plants, herbs and shrubs, and trees. They used plants as pain relievers.
Other contributions are knowledge Greece learned about animals. They discovered some animals had backbones and others don’t(vertebrates and invertebrates).
A final area of contributions is sports. They contributed a lot in sports, including the Olympics. They started they Olympics and many of the events and ceremonies that take place today, including the torch lighting and other ceremonies. Some of the events that are used today that were used then are javelin, discus, boxing, and other events.
